Trevor Lawrence in middle school said Tennessee was his dream offer

It was pretty clear to Trevor Lawrence- even early on in his recruitment- that he wanted to wear orange during his collegiate career. It just wasn’t the right shade.

We all know how the Trevor Lawrence saga ultimately came to an end.

He selected Clemson over a whole host of schools and went on to lead the Tigers to a National Championship, three ACC Championships, three CFB Playoff appearances and two National Title appearances. He was a Heisman finalist during the 2020 season and he’s now slated to be the No. 1 overall pick later this spring.

All of that might not have happened, though, if middle school Trevor Lawrence hadn’t changed his mind

Back in the summer of 2014, a video from Born to Compete was posted highlighted Lawrence. In it, Lawrence looks rather different and towards the end of the video, he talks about the potential of suiting up in orange one day, but up in Rocky Top- not where the Blue Ridge yawns its greatness.

Luckily, Lawrence did end up choosing Clemson and the Tiger program is better because of it. He was a leader and one of the greatest to ever wear the orange and purple.

It’s amazing to think about the ‘what-ifs,’ though. If Lawrence does go to Tennessee, what does his career end up looking like? The Vols aren’t winning a National Championship with him at the helm. We do know that Lawrence grew up watching Peyton Manning and that he was one of the main reasons that Lawrence wanted to go to Tennessee in the first place.

If he goes to Tennessee, how does that affect Clemson? Does Chase Brice end up as the starter? How might Trevor Lawrence not being in Clemson have affected other decisions down the road- like D.J. Uiagalelei, for example?

It’s fun to look back at now because we know how it all turns out. There’s no question that Lawrence choosing Clemson was a decision that mutually benefitted both parties in ways that we’ll never be able to simply calculate or surmise.
