Would Urban Meyer pick Justin Fields over Trevor Lawrence?

Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence has been basically a ‘lock’ for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, but could Urban Meyer change that?

Reports surfaced Thursday that Meyer and the Jacksonville Jaguars were closing in on a deal and the former Ohio State coach was spotted getting off a plane at Cecil Field later that day.

With the Meyer deal almost done, the first thing that has come to Clemson football fans’ minds has been about the odd pairing of Trevor Lawrence and Urban Meyer.

But, there’s no guarantee that Meyer would take Lawrence over another prominent quarterback who is expected to go inside the top-five of the draft in Justin Fields.

Why Urban Meyer could elect to send Trevor Lawrence up north

If Meyer is the head coach, he’s going to be able to select whoever he wants with that No. 1 overall pick- no matter what Jaguars front-office staff have to say about it.

Jaguars owner Shad Khan said he will be ‘more hands-on’ in the decisions made during the 2021 offseason, but the truth of the matter is that they’re going to do what Meyer tells them he wants.

Meyer has a great relationship with Ryan Day and he has watched Justin Fields grow up. He also watched every minute of that Sugar Bowl where Fields led the Buckeyes in a rout of Clemson and Trevor Lawrence.

Does he think that Fields is a safer pick or that he can win faster with Fields’ skill set? It’s certainly something we can wonder at this stage of the offseason.

If Meyer did make that decision, it would send Trevor Lawrence about 930 miles north to the Big Apple where he’d be stuck with a mediocre Jets franchise.
