Clemson football offensive coordinator Tony Elliott linked to a couple of NFL openings
The Clemson football program has done an excellent job of hanging on to its coaches over the years and it’s clear that the assistants have enjoyed working under Dabo Swinney.
Though programs have come calling, we’ve seen the likes of Brent Venables, Jeff Scott (before USF), Tony Elliott and even Brandon Streeter turn down offers of potential interest.
As we get into the thick of the offseason, though, the heat on Elliott is beginning to get turned up.
NFL analyst Josina Anderson reported this week that Elliott could draw some interest from the Seattle Seahawks as the organization looks to fill an open offensive coordinator vacancy.
The overarching belief is that Elliott’s goal is to one day become an NFL head coach. Starting off as an offensive coordinator in the league would give him a nice ‘jumping off’ point to pursue that career.
In addition to the Seahawks, many have begun to link the Clemson football offensive coordinator to the Jacksonville Jaguars
At the time of this writing, the Jaguars are closing in on deal to bring Urban Meyer back to coaching.
Though Elliott has never worked with Meyer professionally, the two do know each other and the fact of the matter is that Elliott’s quarterback of three years- Trevor Lawrence– is about to be drafted by Jacksonville.
It would make a lot of sense for Meyer to try and lure Elliott to Jacksonville with the understanding that by doing so, his new quarterback would be coming into a decently familiar situation where he already knows much of the system, tendencies and language that otherwise would have to be learned.
Elliott did grow close to Lawrence and if he were to make a jump to the NFL, it would make a lot of sense for him to want to go where he can continue to work with his quarterback.
Nothing with Elliott is confirmed as of yet, but it will be interesting to see how these developments take shape over the next couple of weeks.
