DeVonta Smith has Trevor Lawrence to thank for his Heisman Trophy
Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence might have been the face of College Football this season, but he didn’t win the sport’s most prestigious individual award in the Heisman Trophy.
During a virtual ceremony Tuesday evening, Alabama WR DeVonta Smith was declared the winner of the Heisman Trophy. Smith is just the sixth wide receiver all-time to win the award and the first from the position to win the award in nearly 30 years- the last to win from the position was Michigan’s Desmond Howard in 1991.
Alabama fans were obviously elated for Smith to be named the winner and it came as no surprise. After all, he has been the most explosive player in College Football this season. More so, Smith has been nothing short of spectacular and he absolutely is a deserving Heisman winner.
That being said, he still has one player to thank for winning the award and that’s Tiger QB Trevor Lawrence.
Without Trevor Lawrence, there is no College Football season. Period.
Say what you want to about the Heisman Trophy. Say what you want about who the better player was or who made the bigger impact for their team.
We can talk stats and we can talk impact. We can discuss play-making ability and we can talk about the fact that Lawrence isn’t playing in the National Championship game while Smith is. That’s all good and well, but the fact still remains that Lawrence is the one who saved College Football.
When it seemed as if the sport was in dire trouble of being canceled for the fall, it was Lawrence who stepped up and orchestrated the #WeWanttoPlay movement.
He was the leader that College Football needed and without him, we never even get to see the explosive and awe-inspiring plays that Smith made over the course of the season. For some reason, Heisman voters didn’t even consider that when ordering their ballots and it showed.
No one here is discrediting Smith and we all know that he’s the best wide receiver in the nation and the most explosive play-maker in the country, but the absolute disrespect and complete oversight of the impact Trevor Lawrence made this season is laughable and a total failure on the part of the Heisman voters, but we wouldn’t expect anything less.
