It’s time for Clemson football to follow in the footsteps of Alabama moving forward

The Clemson football program is going to have its fair share of detractors as we head into the 2021 offseason and beyond.

The Tigers have now lost their last two games in the CFB Playoff by a combined score of 91-53 (an average of 45.5 points given up and only 26.5 points scored) and they are sitting out of the National Championship game for the first time in two seasons.

With the fashion that Clemson football was beaten in these last two games, there are going to be analysts and media members who begin to question the legitimacy of the program moving forward.

Many are going to point to the losses of Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne and begin to point to the end of the Tigers’ run at the top of the food chain.

That’s exactly why it’s time for Dabo Swinney and his program to follow in the footsteps of Alabama.

The Crimson Tide and Clemson football have similar stories

Do you remember the last two seasons for Alabama before this year? The Crimson Tide lost by an embarrassing margin to Clemson in the 2019 National Championship game (44-16) and then they missed the CFB Playoff during the 2019 season. They didn’t even win their divisions and lost two games in the regular season.

Now? Alabama is back on top and is one win away from another National Championship.

It’s time for Clemson football to take a much similar step.

The Tigers may have been blown out in their last two postseason appearances, but that doesn’t mean they’re left for dead or that the program is failing (although there are questions that must be answered this year).

It’s all about responding to adversity and continuing to adapt as a program.

Nick Saban made the changes within his program and, even though they had a down year, they’ve continued to stay relevant and compete at a high level. Now, it’s time for Swinney to make those same changes. It’s time for Clemson to develop that talent and to come out with a more dominant team this next fall.

It doesn’t just happen because you want it to, but there’s no doubt that the Tigers have the talent, culture, depth and coaching staff in place to continue to remain relevant and to follow in the footsteps of Alabama in their quest for another National Title in the near future.
