The Trevor Lawrence NFL draft sweepstakes are officially over.
Halfway through Week 16 of the 2020 NFL season, the Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes are now over. For most of the season, it looked like Lawrence was off to New York to play for the Jets but after back-to-back wins for the Jets, the Jaguars have now locked up the right to draft the Tigers’ generational talent.
Trevor Lawrence will become the highest-drafted player from Clemson in the history of the program once the Jaguars make it official in May.
Lawrence has the talent and ability and transforms any franchise that drafts him which is why many were not worried about where he landed, but the fact that the Jaguars were able to suck longer than the Jets will work out best for Lawrence in the long run.
Neither team has been very good over the last 20 years but the Jaguars do have a playoff appearance in the last three seasons where the Jets have not been to the playoffs since 2009. When you look at team ownership, Shahid Kahn is a bit better than Woody Johnson.
Jacksonville is better in the long run for Trevor Lawrence
While Jacksonville gets a bad rep from tourists, it is closer to his family’s home in Georgia and will not get nearly as cold, which matters to a quarterback that will play the majority of his games outside. The Jets may have more loyal fans, but they also are quick to throw players under the bus when compared to the fan base in Jacksonville.
There is no question that Jacksonville locking up the first pick in the 2021 NFL draft is a great thing for Trevor Lawrence as well as Clemson fans. For the next four years, we will get to see he and Deshaun Watson play twice a year as both the Texans and the Jaguars are the AFC South.
While Panthers and Falcons fans would have loved to see Lawrence fall in their lap, at least Trevor Lawrence gets to stay close to home and none of us will be forced to watch Jets games over the next decade.
