Selfishness will keep Trevor Lawrence from winning the Heisman

Time to forget the Trevor Lawrence Heisman winner talk.

Anyone with a brain will tell you that Trevor Lawrence is the best player in college football and it isn’t particularly debatable. Though, most everyone in 2015 and 2016 would have said Deshaun Watson was the best player in college football and he won every award but the Heisman.

There are still some Clemson football fans that live in denial about Trevor’s chances to win the Heisman but the reality is, he will not, and neither will any football players that suit up in the orange and purple.

How can I say that? Well, it’s simply not something that head coach Dabo Swinney cares about.

This isn’t going to be a “Dabo hate post”, not even close. He is an amazing head coach, philanthropist, and lives to serve others. All of those things make him who he is, but he can also be selfish.

When you look back across the career that Trevor Lawrence has had at Clemson, you will see that as elite as he was, there was a lot left on the table. He has played in the fourth quarter of only 20 games of the 38 he has played in.

Not only that, but Dabo loves to play a lot of guys – which is fine and it is beneficial in the long run. However, it is ridiculous to have your starting quarterback on the field with the fourth and fifth team receivers in the second quarter.

As I have said before, there are a lot of Clemson fans that believe Dabo walks on water and that is fine – to each their own, but even he says all the time that he isn’t perfect, so people need to stop thinking of him as such.

For Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence to leave Clemson without a Heisman Trophy is simply appalling and selfish. In Coach Swinney’s own words “If our goal was for Trevor Lawrence to win the Heisman, he’d be leading the Heisman race right now, there’s no doubt about that.”

Fact is, Trevor should be leading the Heisman campaign and for all the sacrifices his players do on his behalf, Swinney should be willing to make those same sacrifices so that they can see their names enshrined with the rest of the greats to ever play the game.

Swinney will go down as one of the all-time great coaches because of what his players accomplished on the field. He should evolve as a coach and realize that is okay to see his guys hoist more than ACC and National Championship trophies and not have to feel bad doing so.
