The best pure tight end on the 2020 Clemson football roster

There are many Clemson football fans who are either unaware or ignoring the valued production that TE Davis Allen is bringing to the table for the Tiger offense.

Allen, who isn’t listed as the starter on depth chart at the tight end position, has made a major impact during the 2020 season that simply can’t be valued enough.

As we stand just three games out of a completed regular season, Allen has caught 11 passes for 193 yards and four touchdowns. His four receiving touchdowns are second on the team behind only Amari Rodgers.

While Allen isn’t the leading receiver in terms of tight ends (Braden Galloway has 19 catches for 230 yards and two touchdowns), what he has been able to do is bring the traditional tight end versatility back to the Clemson football offense.

Davis Allen’s versatility has helped the Clemson football offense

Allen is a guy who can block just as well as he can catch. Because of that, we’ve seen the Tigers bring him in on potential running downs and use him in the play-action game. We saw a set up where he was able to sneak behind the Notre Dame defenders last week and catch a big-time touchdown pass.

It’s the way that he’s able to go about his business that’s so impressive, though.

Allen doesn’t get a ton of praise, but yet he gets the job done. He has developed into a solid and reliable blocker- and he’s only going to get better- and he has continued to excel in the passing game.

It’s been an encouraging sign to see both him and Galloway get touches at different times. The two have different skill sets, but complement each other well.

The truth of the matter, however, is that Allen is easily the most pure tight end on the roster and that versatility is going to be a major benefit for the Tiger offense as we move forward with the 2020 season and beyond.
