Clemson football can make program history tonight vs Notre Dame
Clemson football has a chance to make program history tonight against Notre Dame.
The history of Clemson football may not be as glorious as other high profile programs such as Notre Dame, Alabama, USC, or Oklahoma, but the Tigers still have three national titles and a slew of big-time wins over the 125 years of the program.
There are three things that Clemson football does not have – a Heisman Trophy winner, a win over a Top 5 ranked team on the road during the regular season, and a #1 overall pick in the NFL draft.
While we know Clemson had a Heisman stolen from them in 2016, it is shocking that the Tigers have never beaten a Top 5 ranked team on the road during the regular season. Since 1948, the Tigers have accumulated 43 road wins over teams ranked in the Top 25 but not have been over a team in the Top 5.
Since 1940, the Tigers have faced just 13 teams ranked in the AP Top 5 in the regular season – the only time the Tigers faced more than one Top 5 ranked team that would be 1966 when they faced #4 Alabama and #5 USC in weeks three and five.
The Tigers would lose those two games a combined 56-0.
Clemson football can make program history with a win Saturday night.
Obviously, there isn’t a lot left for Clemson to achieve as a program and ironically the three boxes the Tigers have not checked off can all be accomplished in 2020.
Trevor Lawrence can win the Heisman, despite missing two games, the Tigers can beat a Top 5 team on the road and Lawrence will more than likely be the top overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft.
The road to victory tonight in South Bend is paved with difficulty as the Tigers will again be without some very important pieces – Trevor Lawrence, Mike Jones Jr. James Skalski, and Tyler Davis to name a few but their replacements got a lot of experience last week against Boston College.
If the Tigers can stay focused and take Saturday night a play at a time, there is no reason that Clemson football won’t beat its first-ever Top 5 opponent on the road and add another Notre Dame headstone to the graveyard.
