As a Clemson football fan, it’s not near as fun to watch South Carolina lose as it used to be

It used to fill Clemson football fans with an innate sense of joy watching the South Carolina Gamecocks lose, but has that been taken away?

Saturday night, Clemson football fans who chose to watch the Gamecocks play were treated to an absolute dismantling of Will Muschamp‘s ball club at the hands of the LSU Tigers.

South Carolina was basically out-matched from the very beginning and things only got worse as the game went on.

But was it all that fulfilling for Clemson football fans?

Don’t get me wrong, it’s still great to sit down and watch a game in which the Gamecocks have no chance. But, sometimes, it does get a little old to watch that team continue to be so bad that they simply aren’t competitive.

Other than that upset of Georgia last season, the Gamecocks have basically been completely blistered by every semi-elite program that they’ve played for more than a half-decade. Muschamp hasn’t done anything to improve that program and, in some ways, it seems like they’ve taken steps backwards.

It almost makes you feel sorry for them, am I right? Oh, wait. I’m not?

You know, every time I start to have thoughts about feeling sorry for South Carolina fans or thinking that it’s become old- because those thoughts do enter my head- I think back to just a few years ago when Steve Spurrier was the coach.

I think about how loud and proud Gamecock fans were. How insufferable that fan base was. I think about those Clemson losses to South Carolina and how infuriating it was to see them have success.

And then, all of a sudden, I don’t feel all that bad anymore.

Clemson football won’t get the pleasure of giving the Gamecocks a seventh-straight beating this season, but there’s plenty of hate instilled in this rivalry that Tiger fans will still take great joy in watching other teams beat South Carolina senselessly, even if does begin to seem monotonous on the surface.
