Trevor Lawrence is being told by a former NFL All-Pro to (possibly) return to school.
Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence has already said that this will be his last year as a college quarterback, however, he still has plenty of time to change his mind as he has two more years of eligibility remaining.
Former four-time Pro-Bowl wide receiver and Atlanta Falcons Ring of Honor member Roddy White is advising Lawrence to slow down on that decision and to take a wait and see approach.
White has advised Lawrence that if the Jets hold the top draft pick in 2021, that he should return to Clemson instead of entering the NFL draft.
That is some solid advice from a player who statistically was among the five best receivers during his playing career that spanned 2005-2015 after being chosen in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft. We should all appreciate what the former two-time All-Low country honoree, a two-time All-State honoree from Charleston is telling the future Heisman Trophy winner.
The Jets are like the abyss of the NFL – really great players go there never to be heard from again.
They are about to hire their eighth NFL head coach since 2000 and have turned future all-pro level talents into busts. See Quinnen Williams, Sam Darnold, and Mekhi Becton. The Jets are so bad that Jamal Adams forced his way out before ever getting to his second contract.
The same fate lies ahead for Trevor Lawrence should they hold the top draft pick in 2021 and he is too good on and off the field to subject himself to the stupidity that is the Jets.
Sure, there are players that believe they can turn franchises around, however, this isn’t college football where one or two players can change the trajectory of a program.
In the NFL, it takes everyone from the owner down to the practice squad to get things right and Jets owner Woody Johnson is the ultimate buffoon. This is an owner who has been investigated more times for alleged sexist and racist comments than his team has made the playoffs in recent years. That is not a franchise anyone can turn around, no matter how elite they are.
While there is still a lot of college and NFL football left to be played, if the Jets do in fact get the top draft pick in 2021, Trevor Lawrence should listen to his advisor as he is giving him some solid long-term career advice.
