Clemson football: Ranking all nine Division I football teams in South Carolina
Clemson football is the most dominant college football team in the state of South Carolina.
No one is going to be debate this as it is fact. However, who is the second-best team in the state of South Carolina behind Clemson football?
There are currently nine college football programs that play Division I football in the state. OF those nine FCS and FBS programs – just four are playing this fall – Citadel, Coastal Carolina, Clemson, and U of SC. Furman, Wofford, South Carolina State, Charleston Southern, and Presbyterian all are planning to play in spring 2021.
With that in mind, let’s have a little bit of fun and (with bias) rank all nine Division I college football teams in the state of South Carolina.
1. Clemson Tigers
As we said above, Clemson football is the top program in the state as well as in college football. Not a single FBS or FCS program would stay within five touchdowns of the Tigers at this point. South Carolina should be sending the SEC a fruit basket that they spared them what would have been the ugliest butt-kicking the chickens had ever received.
2. Coastal Carolina
The Chanticleers are ranked in the AP Top 25 for the first time in program history as they currently sit at 4-0. Coastal enjoyed a lot of postseason success as an FCS member school and hope to make a bowl game for the first time ever later this year.
Spoiler alert – they will.
3. Citadel
The Bulldogs are the only FCS football program in the state to be playing football this fall. They had four games scheduled against FBS opponents – Clemson football, South Florida, Eastern Kentucky, and Army. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs went 0-4 but hope to rebound when they pick up this spring.
4. South Carolina State
The South Carolina State Bulldogs are coming off of a year that saw them win a lot of games. They went 8-3 overall and 6-2 in the MEAC.
5. Wofford
They finished 2019 8-4 and have high expectations for spring 2021
6. Furman
Finished 8-5 a year ago and will be neck and neck with Wofford in the Southern Conference.
7. Charleston Southern
They finished 6-6 under first-year head coach Autry Denson in 2019 and are hoping to build off of a 4-2 Big South conference record from a year ago.
8. Presbyterian
When the Blue Hose kickoff in spring 2020 they will have left the Big South and will be among the FCS Independents. As bad as they are, the Blue Hose are still better than the team we have ranked last of the nine programs in the state of South Carolina.
9. University of South Carolina
Despite beating Auburn for the first time since 1933, the Gamecocks are still the most irrelevant program in the state of South Carolina.
They currently sit at 1-2 after losses to Tennessee and Florida but fortunately for them they only have to play to an SEC schedule in 2020 and won’t have to face Clemson football for the first time since 1908.
At least the SEC spared them one embarrassing loss in 2020.
