Clemson football defensive end Xavier Thomas returned to action against Miami.

Clemson football head coach Dabo Swinney admitted he could not have foreseen the Tigers playing over one-third of the season without two of the team’s most experienced defensive ends, Xavier Thomas and Justin Foster.

Foster continues to work his way back. Xavier’s story about his battle with coronavirus and other challenges have been thoroughly documented. Lost in the hype of the Miami game was the return of Xavier Thomas.

Last week it was reported the goal was to have Thomas dress and go through pregame to see how he responded. Low and behold in the midst of a blowout Xavier Thomas took the field for the first time in 2020. In a season where you are hoping to play 14 games, the return of Thomas at this stage of the season is significant.

Initially listed as a backup Myles Murphy’s backup heading into the Georgia Tech game this week. Having not only an extra body but an experienced player is a luxury for Coach Venables moving forward.

Expectations were put on hold for Xavier Thomas in year three.

It was difficult to place any real expectations for Thomas this season after Coach Swinney announced he would be redshirted due to illnesses. During the preseason, many pundits saw 2020 as a make or break season for the former number one recruit from Florence.

To get him back game five versus game 11 is significant.

Xavier will have time to get back up to speed, re-acclimate to the game week routine, and find his role on this defense. As the calendar moves quickly approach November, I expect him to assert himself as a key cog in the Tigers defense.

As you look ahead, there is a tremendous opportunity for him to build positive momentum. Of course, he has to stay healthy but I think the time away and having to fight his way back will bring out an edge and another gear from Xavier.

In the next three weeks, there will be a chance to play meaningful snaps against teams with a variety of offensive styles. Ultimately leading up to the big trip to South Bend on November 7th where his experience and present will be key.
