Grading Trevor Lawrence’s performance against Virginia Cavaliers
Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence continued his trek towards a possible Heisman Trophy and the potential No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft with an efficient performance against the Virginia Cavaliers Saturday evening.
Trevor Lawrence- who is trending basically ever Sunday on Twitter because of his expected draft status- led Clemson to a 41-23 victory over Virginia and improved the Tigers’ record to 3-0 on the season.
How did Trevor Lawrence perform in the outing? Here’s a look at our grade & analysis
Lawrence completed 25-of-38 passing attempts for 329 yards and three touchdowns. He also had six carries for 36 yards with a long run of 22 yards.
In the first half, Trevor Lawrence had a total of seven incompletions. Looking at those plays, he made the smart decision to throw the ball away on a couple of hurries and then also suffered a drop, as well.
Perhaps the most impressive throw from Lawrence came in the second quarter when he hit Amari Rodgers on a 27-yard touchdown reception. He put the ball in perfect position right in the back of the end zone and Rodgers got one foot down to score.
Lawrence had a couple of completions that were a bit high- for example the completion to Frank Ladson Jr. over the middle and one to Braden Galloway– but for the most part he was extremely efficient and did an excellent job with his accuracy.
Lawrence continues to show great improvement in his passing ability from last season and he is throwing the ball with confidence. He’s not forcing it into tight windows, but instead is finding the open man and putting the ball right on the money. That’s exactly what you want to see if your team is ‘tanking for Trevor’ (we’re looking at you, Jets & Falcons).
While Lawrence still has work to do and he clearly was frustrated at times with the pressure brought by Virginia, he played a solid game and did what was needed of him to pick up the victory.
Overall Grade: B+
Trevor Lawrence didn’t have those awe-inspiring plays in this one, but he did everything needed to pick up the victory and did a great job finding the open man, taking what the defense gave him and allowing his playmakers to get the ball out in space.
