‘Tanking for Trevor Lawrence’ already in full effect just two weeks into the NFL season

We’re just two weeks into the 2020 NFL season and we’re already seeing teams begin their trek towards ‘tanking‘ for Trevor Lawrence.

Trevor Lawrence- who is playing his last season as the quarterback for Clemson football- is set to graduate this December and will declare for the 2021 NFL Draft shortly thereafter. As soon as he does, Lawrence will be the expected No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

As the 2020 NFL season has progress, we’re already beginning to see teams tanking for Trevor Lawrence. Here’s a look a the franchises who are strongest in the running to be able to draft Lawrence so far.

The Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes after Week 2

Here’s a look at the teams who are 0-2 after the first two weeks of the season, first.

  • New York Jets
  • Miami Dolphins
  • Denver Broncos
  • Cincinnati Bengals
  • Houston Texans
  • New York Giants
  • Philadelphia Eagles
  • Minnesota Vikings
  • Detroit Lions
  • Atlanta Falcons
  • Carolina Panthers

That’s a long list- 11 total franchises- of teams without a win through the first two weeks, but we obviously don’t expect it to stay that way.

The Dolphins, Bengals and Texans are all franchises that already have their quarterback in place and likely wouldn’t be interested in drafting Trevor Lawrence anyway, barring something unforeseen. Although I wouldn’t completely rule the Dolphins out if they ended the season with the No. 1 overall pick.

Teams to really keep your eye on as we progress, though, are the New York Jets and the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers have already announced that RB Christian McCaffrey will be out several weeks with a high-ankle sprain and many are already calling that out as a tactic to tank for Lawrence.
