Deshaun Watson is now the highest-paid player in the NFL
Deshaun Watson agrees to massive contract extension with the Houston Texans
Former Clemson football QB Deshaun Watson agreed to terms on what is now the most lucrative year-by-year long-term deal in the history of the NFL.
If there were any doubts about Deshaun Watson staying in Houston long-term, those were put to bed Saturday morning when ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the former Tiger had agreed to a four-year deal worth $177 million.
The total value of the deal, with nearly $111 million in guarantees, is second in the league only to Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, who signed a $503 million contract over the course of 12 years.
Even so, Watson will now be the highest-paid NFL quarterback year-by-year in the history of the sport. While Mahomes has the highest-average in terms of per-year, his actual contract is back-loaded a bit and it will actually be Watson who makes more money over the next four seasons compared to Mahomes.
While some of the details on the deal have yet to be reported, Watson is expected to sign the contract later Saturday evening.
Deshaun Watson just made bank and that’s putting it lightly
Anyone who has known Deshaun Watson or seen him grow up in the Clemson football program knows just how great of character he has off-the-field.
Watson came from humble beginnings and has now worked himself up to becoming the single highest-paid individual in the NFL over the course of the next four seasons.
Watson has always put others before himself- like when he first stepped into the league and used his first paycheck to help out the stadium workers in Houston- and Tiger fans should be absolutely ecstatic to see him get this big payday.
While some are still wary of the Houston Texans franchise, in general- and we’ll get to more of that later- you have to be happy for Deshaun and his family.
