Where does Clemson football stand with its CB offers in 2021 cycle?

Perhaps the most unfinished position for the 2021 Clemson football recruiting class is cornerback as we approach the fall.

The Tigers previously suffered a decommitment from Jordan Hancock to Ohio State and that has left them barren for the 2021 recruiting cycle.

Heading into the cycle, it has been widely believed and expected that the Clemson football coaching staff would take two cornerbacks in this class and that’s still the case. However, as we finish up the month of July, the Tigers don’t have one commitment currently.

Here’s a look at where Clemson football stands with its other cornerback offers.

Clemson football has made 12 offers at the cornerback position

It’s clear before we even get started that the Tigers are being careful and methodical about the offers they dish out at the position. Even though they’re expected to take two cornerbacks, they’ve only made 12 offers.

That speaks to the patience and ability of this staff. Defensive backs are always typically slower in shutting down their recruiting process and the coaching staff understands that point.

Now, here’s a look at the prospects who the Tigers have offered who are already committed elsewhere:

Already-Committed Offers

  • Tony Grimes (North Carolina)
  • Jakailin Johnson (Ohio State)
  • Jordan Hancock (Ohio State)
  • Clinton Burton Jr. (Boston College)
  • Philip Riley (Notre Dame)
  • Ryan Barnes (Notre Dame)
  • Kevin Knowles (Florida State)

Grimes has already re-classified to enroll this fall at UNC, just for reference. At this point, I don’t see any of these prospects flipping commitments, although the Tigers could still get in potentially with Philip Riley (4-star) or Clinton Burton Jr. (4-star who just decommitted from Florida to Boston College).

However, it doesn’t seem likely that any of these prospects decommit.

Uncommitted Offers:

  • Ga’Quincy McKinstry (5-star)
  • Jason Marshall (5-star)
  • Nyland Green (4-star)
  • Nathaniel Wiggins (4-star)
  • Kamari Lassiter (3-star)

McKinstry and Marshall are out. McKinstry just released his top-three and didn’t include the Tigers, and Marshall previously had the Tigers in his top-three, but just released a new top-five that didn’t include Clemson.

That leaves us with three candidates who have been offered thus far: 4-star Nyland Green, 4-star Nathaniel Wiggins and 3-star Kamari Lassiter.

At this point, Clemson is believed to be the favorite for Green, but he is nowhere near ready to make a decision.

Wiggins, an Atlanta, GA product, has Clemson in his final group, but it would seem like a longshot for the Tigers to come away with his commitment at this point. Wiggins is heavily favored to go to LSU and announced that he would be committing on August 28th, which would point us to believe he has already made his decision.

And then there’s Kamari Lassiter.

Lassiter was offered by Clemson football following the Hancock decommitment. While he is just listed as a 3-star currently, he is trending upwards and very well could be a 4-star before it’s all said and done. Lassiter released a top-six that included Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Florida State and Georgia Tech earlier in July, but recently told AL.com that the Clemson offer “gave him something to think about.”

While the Tigers still have an opportunity with Lassiter, it’s clear that they’ll be making up ground in a battle that has heavily been between his two in-state schools: Alabama and Auburn.

It’s clear, at least at this point, that Clemson is ‘All In’ on Nyland Green and that the Tigers are still considering all of their options for the other spot in the class. We’d expect more offers to go out in the near future as the coaching staff attempts to zero-in on some potential new targets.
