Clemson Football: It’s time for the ACC to stand up to Notre Dame
Clemson football fans obviously want to the Tigers to play Notre Dame in 2020
Clemson football fans, along with the rest of the country, got their first glimpse into what the 2020 season will look like Thursday afternoon when the Big Ten made its major announcement.
The Big Ten announced that it would only play in-conference games during the 2020 fall season and there have been multiple reports from several analysts and various networks that each of the other Power-5 conferences are expected to follow suit.
With each of the Power-5 conferences choosing to only play in-conference, Notre Dame is hanging in limbo land.
Well, the Fighting Irish would be in limbo land if it weren’t for the fact that John Swofford has already reportedly promised them that the ACC would give them games in the event of this happening.
Clemson football fans obviously want to see the Tigers play Notre Dame this season as it would bolster the schedule and give Tiger fans an exciting match-up to look forward to, but it shouldn’t come as a cost to the long-term perception and success of the conference.
It’s time for the ACC to stand up to Notre Dame
Ever since Notre Dame joined the league as a part-time member, the conference has done nothing but cater to the Fighting Irish.
The ACC gave Notre Dame games when it desperately needed them and the conference continues to allow the Golden Domers to operate as an Independent football program while reaping all the other benefits of being in a conference.
The idea was that Notre Dame would eventually become a full-time member. Well, the time is now.
It’s time for the ACC to stand up to Notre Dame and simply find out where it stands with the Fighting Irish. Swofford simply needs to ask Notre Dame this question: Are you in or are you out?
Perhaps Notre Dame can find games elsewhere, but this seems like the most leverage the ACC has had in quite some time in its negotiations with the school. There’s absolutely no reason for the conference to cater to Notre Dame and basically continue to get minimal in return.
