Clemson football: Tigers may not be right fit for younger brothers
Clemson football is said to be a family and is something that the coaching staff prides themselves on, but does that make Clemson the right move for siblings of former and current players?
Reading social media, Clemson football fans love to encourage the fortunate young men that have announced an offer from the Tigers, to pick our beloved program. Adults have no business under any circumstances reaching out to recruits in any way, but that is another topic for another day.
This last weekend, Trevor Etienne announced a Clemson football offer, and as expected Tiger nation went crazy. (Again, adults have no business under any circumstances reaching out to recruits in any way) We assume that Trevor and his family know all about Clemson football, Clemson University, the town of Clemson and everything that being a Tiger encompasses.
It is easy to assume that at this point, Trevor would have all of the information needed on Clemson. He has been to dozens of games, both home and away, and presumably, he knows the coaching staff well. But does that make Clemson football right for him?
Over the last couple of years, there have been a couple of standout Tigers whose younger brothers decided that Clemson was not for them.
Devon Lawrence, younger brother of former All-ACC defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence picked up a Clemson offer back in 2015. The running back never officially visited Clemson and chose between UNC and Tennessee, eventually choosing the Tar Heels.
Daniyel Ngata was the number two all-purpose back in the country last year’s signing class. Of course, older brother Joseph suited up for Clemson football in 2019 and is expected to be a huge part of the 2020 offense.
The younger Ngata came down to Arizona State, Oklahoma State, and Texas A&M. He eventually decided to become a Sun Devil and play for Herm Edwards. Daniyel was the highest-rated recruit for the 2020 Sun Devil class that finished ranked in the Top 25.
Current Clemson football players have young elite brothers up next
A.J. Terrell’s younger brother, Avieon, was the first and only offer Clemson football has made for the 2023 class. DJ Uiagalelei younger brother, Matayo, is going to be among the best in the country in the 2023 class and will more than likely receive a Clemson offer soon, both will probably keep the Tigers in the mix but they aren’t guaranteed to sign.
That brings us back to Trevor Etienne.
The toughest part of Trevor and his decision will be the same one that Mike Davis faced coming out of high school. Go to Clemson and be known as James’ little brother or go somewhere else and create his own name and legacy.
With all respect to James Davis, he isn’t Travis Etienne. His Clemson football career was great but Travis is LEGENDARY.
That is a lot to put on a young man trying to make a name for himself and travel his own path. It would be a little easier if they didn’t both play the same position but Trevor would be arriving not too long after Travis is gone and still very fresh in the minds of fans and media.
While Trevor needs to make the best decision for himself, there is a lot more on his plate and a lot more that will go into his decision other than the facilities and uniforms of the college he chooses.
It would be great to see him put on a Clemson football uniform in the future, but one can understand why he would want to go create his own legacy and blaze his own trail elsewhere.
