Clemson Football: D.J. Uiagalelei could be the key to 2020 season
Freshman QB DJ Uiagalelei could be the key to the 2020 Clemson football season
A quarterback is the difference between a championship-caliber team and a perennial pretender, and that statement may not ever have been truer than this season.
The Clemson football team enters the 2020 season as one of the favorites to not only repeat as ACC Champions, but to make it back to the CFB Playoff and compete for another National Championship.
One of the major reasons surrounding the overwhelming odds in favor of Clemson football has to do with the return of star QB Trevor Lawrence. But could it be the quarterback behind Lawrence who is actually the key to the season?
There’s been a ton of talk about the Clemson football program and the rest of the College Football world following news that 21 Tigers had tested positive for COVID-19. In the same span of time, LSU announced that 30 players were being quarantined.
Those numbers say one thing and one thing only when it comes to football, should we have a full season: The Tigers must develop depth. And we all know the most important position on the field is quarterback.
Clemson football QB DJ Uiagalelei has to be ready for action
Now, obviously, the plan is for Trevor Lawrence to play the entire season and lead the Tigers himself. But Clemson has to be prepared for the worst case scenario.
That means DJ Uiagalelei– the 5-star freshman- has to be ready for action if his name is called upon.
There could be situations across the country this season where teams find out that their star quarterback has tested positive, perhaps just a day or two before the game, and the back-up is all of a sudden thrusted into action for the next two weeks- with short preparation.
That creates an intriguing and interesting dynamic in which freshman DJ Uiagalelei- should he earn the back-up position, of course- could become the key to success during the 2020 season.
Everyone has to be ready when their name is called and that includes the talented freshman gunslinger who will be taking snaps behind Trevor Lawrence this season.
