The Clemson football coaching staff could land a 5-star CB

Could the Clemson football coaching staff come away with a commitment from a 5-star cornerback in this 2021 recruiting cycle?

When looking at the 2021 recruiting class, one position that the Clemson football program has been cautiously approaching is cornerback.

The Tigers typically recruit defensive backs slower than any other position on the field and it has paid off in the long run. As we approach the summer, we’re starting to see Clemson football zero-in on a few key targets.

Here’s a look at where the Tigers stand with a few of their priority cornerback targets, including two 5-stars.

Clemson football wins more recruiting battles than it loses

The Tigers currently already have one commitment from 4-star CB Jordan Hancock in the class, but they’ll likely be looking to take one more before it’s all said and done.

At this point, the offers are few- just 11 total– and it would seem that the potential top targets are beginning to rise to the top:

  • Tony Grimes (5-star)
  • Ga’Quincy McKinstry (5-star)
  • Jason Marshall (4-star)
  • Nyland Green (4-star)

Of the players on this list, two are 5-stars: Grimes and McKinstry.

Both Grimes and McKinstry listed the Tigers in their top schools and McKinstry just narrowed his list down to five- Clemson, Georgia, Auburn, LSU and Alabama.

Both would likely be considered leans elsewhere currently- Grimes with Georgia and McKinstry with Alabama and Auburn (two in-state schools)- but there’s no reason to believe that Clemson football can’t stay involved and eventually pick-up a commitment if things went the right way.

Neither of these defensive backs are slated to make a decision in the next couple of months- unless something changes- and that will give Dabo Swinney and his staff an opportunity to move in and make a strong pitch.

It will be interesting to see what happens, but I wouldn’t count Clemson out of the race for either 5-star CB just yet.
