The vast majority of Clemson football fans are ready to see Deshaun Watson find another NFL franchise, but he could be set to receive major money.

Clemson football fans were left stunned earlier this spring when it was reported that the Houston Texans would be trading away former Tiger WR DeAndre Hopkins for a bad contract in David Johnson to the Arizona Cardinals.

Hopkins, one of the best wide receivers to come from the Clemson football program, is considered the top wide receiver in the league and was Deshaun Watson‘s favorite target each of the past couple of seasons with the Texans.

The bad trade left a sour taste in the mouth of Clemson football fans- and Texans fans alike- and it brought the vast majority of Tiger nation to the same conclusion: Watson needs to get out of Houston as soon as humanly possible.

As expected, the Texans picked up the fifth-year option on Watson’s rookie contract and the organization is already beginning talks about a long-term deal.

The Houston Chronicle estimated that Watson could make somewhere in the range of $40 to $42 million per season when he signs his long-term deal, but there’s still that question of what he should do moving forward.

Yes, that’s a ton of money. But the truth of the matter is that the former Clemson football QB could make that anywhere, not just in Houston. The Texans will likely be able to offer a little more guaranteed, but Watson could still become one of the highest-paid players in the NFL and leave Houston to continue his career.

It’s not about the money in this situation. It’s about the longevity and success of his career.

The Texans proved with that trade- and several other questionable decisions prior to that- that they aren’t sold out to winning. Watson needs to go somewhere that appreciates his skillset and is committed to building a winning roster around him. That just doesn’t seem to be Houston, no matter what kind of money is attached.
