Las Vegas Raiders continue Clemson football love fest
Two former Clemson football players have now been selected by the Las Vegas Raiders as the franchise continues to show its love for Dabo Swinney’s program.
The Las Vegas Raiders have now selected two former Clemson football players in back-to-back picks in the mid-rounds of the 2020 NFL Draft.
To the surprise of many Clemson football fans, the Raiders selected S Tanner Muse in the third-round with pick No. 100 Friday night in the draft. Though Muse was expected to be drafted, not many thought he would go in the third-round. But that’s exactly what happened.
Well, we didn’t have to wait long to see the Raiders take another former Clemson football player off the board on Saturday.
Las Vegas elected to trade up and acquired pick No. 109 in the fourth-round. With that selection, they chose OG John Simpson.
The absolute love for Dabo Swinney’s program is evident in John Gruden and his franchise. No organization has drafted more Clemson football players than the Raiders over the past couple of seasons and the franchise now garnering the nickname ‘Clemson West.’
As far as what the Raiders will get out of each player, here’s our analysis.
Analysis:
Tanner Muse would’ve been available later in the draft, but he’s going to serve as that ‘nickelback’ presence in the Raiders’ defensive backfield.
Muse showed that he has elite-level speed and is a great athlete. When you couple that athleticism with his physicality, you see why many NFL franchises began to fall in love with him over the course of the pre-draft process. Muse has trouble in coverage sometimes, as we have all seen, but playing that role will give him the ability to get a little bigger and play at a more comfortable position.
As far as John Simpson is concerned, he’s an absolute steal at pick No. 109.
Simpson is sometimes a little slow out of his stance, but he makes up for that with his elite strength. Simpson is one of the stronger interior offensive linemen in this draft class and he’s a guy who has the ability to develop into a starter during Year 1.
Muse and Simpson join a plethora of former Clemson football players currently in the Raiders’ roster, including Clelin Ferrell, Trayvon Mullen and Hunter Renfrow.
