Clemson football: Trevor Lawrence is sneaking by
Clemson football quarterback Trevor Lawrence did the unthinkable when he led the Tigers to a national title as a true freshman, now he seems to be an afterthought for most.
Lawrence helped guide Clemson to a 29 game winning streak that was snapped in the national title game loss to LSU just four months ago. While he started 24 of those games, he played a major role in all of them.
He was the talk about the college football world for nearly 18 months before questions started popping up about his ability as a quarterback after he had a couple of early season miscues in 2019. People on every network were asking “what is wrong with Trevor Lawrence” and even Clemson “fans” were on twitter calling for him to be benched. (Yes, we have those receipts)
Even now, NFL “experts” are saying that Trevor Lawrence is no longer a lock to be the first pick in the 2021 NFL draft and that teams will want Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields instead. Yes, that is the same Justin Fields that threw a few interceptions in his team’s playoff loss to the Tigers just five months ago.
Trevor Lawrence is currently on a four-year pace to throw for 14,000 yards and 132 touchdowns. That would put him Top 10 all-time in passing yards and Top 5 all-time in passing touchdowns.
Yes, all-time.
Yet, there are people who say that Lawrence “stats” aren’t good and that he is simply a system quarterback. Well, these same people forget that Fields was not good enough for the “system” at UGA and Ryan Day had to sculpt his offense to meet the needs of Fields. Which by the way is what great coaches do.
Imagine a kid that is tracking to be one of the all-time greats and yet isn’t seen as one. Imagine a kid that could potentially win more than one national title and finish the game with better measurements than nearly everyone who has ever played the game and is seen as an “ok” player by people across the country.
Thankfully Clemson football fans do not have to imagine that nonsense because we see who Lawrence is and what he is becoming up close every day and we could not be more thankful he chose us a couple of years ago.
