Clemson Football: 5-star recruiting target is as good as gone
Though Clemson football is still in the technically in the discussion, it doesn’t seem that the Tigers will earn a commitment from a 5-star target.
The Clemson football recruiting class for the 2021 cycle is going to be one of the best in the country.
The Tigers have recruited at a high level for several years now and continue to bring in some of the top talent from around the country.
However, Clemson football fans shouldn’t be getting their hopes up on 5-star QB Caleb Williams.
Williams, the No. 1 QB prospect in the nation, released his top five schools just a couple of weeks ago and included Clemson, alongside LSU, Maryland, Oklahoma and Penn State. He was on campus for the Tigers’ Elite Junior Day back in January.
Though Williams has expressed interest in Clemson football, the most recent developments would indicate that the Tigers are further down his list than most may think.
Williams said via Sports Illustrated that he had Facetimed with Oklahoma Head Coach Lincoln Riley earlier this week and then dropped this subtle hint on Twitter when a wide receiver target who is linked to him dropped his final schools.

Kaden Prather, a 4-star WR from the Washington, DC area, released his top five schools with three being the same as Williams. Prather listed Maryland, Penn State and Oklahoma, who is considered the favorite to land Williams’ services.
The truth of the matter is that it was always going to be a tough sell for Clemson football. The Tigers already have 5-star DJ Uiagalelei on campus for a presumptive three years and right there beside him they have 4-star Taisun Phommachanh, who is also competing.
Williams would be joining the deepest QB room in the nation and would likely be asked to wait his turn with Uiagalelei on campus for quite some time.
In contrast, at Oklahoma, Spencer Rattler would be entering his redshirt sophomore season when Williams arrived on campus and he would potentially on have to wait one year- as Uiagalelei is basically doing now at Clemson- before inheriting the starting position.
