Clemson football has seen this before and will likely see it again in the future. Having an elite franchise-changing quarterback on your roster brings lots of attention and with moves being made across the NFL, some team’s fans are screaming TANK FOR TREVOR.
Okay, maybe they are not screaming those words, but they are definitely typing them all over social media. Go to Facebook or Twitter and you will see the hashtag TankForTrevor will generate thousands of responses. Fans of teams across the NFL want their team to tank for Trevor.
Be careful what you wish for. Tanking for Trevor will more than likely not net your team the services for Trevor Lawrence and all you did was waste more than a year of your life daydreaming for something that will not happen.
There is no doubt that Trevor Lawrence will be the top draft pick of the NFL draft when he decides to come out, but the assumption that he declares for 2021 could be a costly one. We know four things about Trevor. He is humble, elite, a champion and on track to graduate with a college degree in December 2020.
What we do not know is if he loves college as much as we love him. If he does, he could follow in the footsteps of his idol Peyton Manning and return to Clemson for the fourth year and rewrite every school and conference passing record.
We have seen plenty of former Clemson football players turn down the NFL limelight to spend one more year in Tiger town. C.J. Spiller, Vic Beasley, Christian Wilkins Isaiah Simmons, and Travis Etienne all come to mind as players who could have left after their third year in school but decided to come back. They have all shown that the NFL can wait and what Clemson offers is special and cannot be replicated anywhere else.
Tanking for Trevor is going to happen but let’s hope teams have to tank for two more seasons, not just one.
