Clemson Football: 5-star DB Fred Davis is vastly underrated
5-star Clemson football DB Fred Davis II doesn’t get near the credit he deserves in terms of being a shutdown cornerback.
As exciting as the 2020 Clemson football recruiting class has been, one of the 5-stars who often gets forgotten is cornerback Fred Davis II.
Davis, who is rated the No. 3 cornerback in the nation, officially signed his National Letter of Intent Wednesday during the Early National Signing Day.
Davis committed to Clemson back in April and has been solidly a Tiger ever sense. Though he is a great addition, many Tiger fans don’t have a great understanding on just how good Davis could be when it’s all said and done.
He’s not the biggest cornerback, but what he does well is use his athleticism and aggressiveness to be one of the best in pure-coverage in the nation in this current cycle. Davis will be pushed to add mass and maintain that elite-level speed over the course of his Clemson football career, but his potential and ability to compete has been vastly underrated.
While Davis won’t likely start during his freshman season, there’s no reason to believe that he won’t be able to compete with players like Sheridan Jones, Andrew Booth and Mario Goodrich for playing time. It should be fully expected that the talented freshman competes for a spot in the two-deep and will have an opportunity to take over as a full-time starter in just a couple of seasons.
Davis’s athleticism, pure-coverage ability, and foot speed are going to be huge assets to the Tigers’ defensive backfield for years to come. He’s a very talented cornerback with the potential to develop into an All-American and high draft pick before it’s all said and done.
