Clemson Football: OC Tony Elliott linked to potential Dallas Cowboys’ opening
Clemson football co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliott has been tied to a potential opening with the Dallas Cowboys, according to reports.
With the 2019 Clemson football season coming to a close, we are beginning to hear rumors and reporting of several assistant coaches tied to other positions.
The most prominent report pertaining to Clemson football has to do with Co-Offensive Coordinator Tony Elliott.
NFL Network Reporter Jane Slater reported Friday that Dallas Cowboys’ Owner Jerry Jones said that Jason Garrett will remain the coach, but that the franchise had ‘serious’ interest in Urban Meyer despite Jones’ statement. In addition to Meyer, Slater said that Lincoln Riley and Tony Elliott remain possibilities should the job come available.
In addition to the Cowboys, Elliott’s named has also been thrown around for the vacant USF opening.
Co-Offensive Coordinator Jeff Scott has also had his name tied to several big coaching searches.
Scott has been linked to Florida State and Ole Miss recently as the Power-5 schools look to bring in a breath of fresh air to turn their programs around.
Thoughts:
It’s way too early in coaching searches to truly sift out what’s true and what’s not in these reports.
It is interesting that Elliott would already have his name tied to an NFL head-coaching position- with one of the most prominent franchises in the league, at that. At this point, though, it would be a long shot to see him get that job, in my opinion. The Cowboys will want to bring in a bigger name- like an Urban Meyer– to appease to their massive fanbase.
As far as hearing Jeff Scott tied to Ole Miss and Florida State, the truth is that both of these programs have reportedly shown interest in a plethora of candidates. Though they were both swift in firing their former coaches, it doesn’t seem that they had any names lined up, or their top target fell through the cracks.
Scott would be an excellent head coach, but neither one of those programs are ideal spots at this point. They’ve already shown major impatience and both fanbases are looking for a major hire. Taking an assistant coach from Clemson football probably wouldn’t classify as that, making the job even tougher right off the bat.
We’ll continue to give updates as we hear of these coaching rumors pertaining to members of the Clemson football coaching staff, but for now they should remain just that: Rumors.
