Clemson Football: Top 5 Largest Victories all-time vs. South Carolina Gamecocks
The Clemson football program holds a 70-42-4 advantage over South Carolina all-time, and many of those games haven’t been all that close.
The Clemson football team will travel to Williams-Brice Stadium this weekend for a noon game against in-state rival South Carolina.
Throughout Rivalry Week, Tiger fans enjoy looking back at some of the fonder moments, especially the classics, of the Palmetto Bowl. Many Clemson football fans remember ‘The Catch’ by Jerry Butler that sealed the 1977 matchup late for the Tigers against the Gamecocks.
Others remember the 2000 ‘The Catch: Part II’ that saw Rod Gardner come up with a huge grab inside the South Carolina 10-yard line with three Gamecock defenders around him. Others yet remember Mark Buchholz’s game-winning field goal as time expired in Williams-Brice during the 2007 season. Others think back to the original ‘Catch’ that saw Jerry Butler come up with a twisting, spinning grab in the end zone to lead the Tigers past South Carolina.
When looking at this rivalry, there have been plenty of ‘classic’ moments. There have been plenty of times where plays were made down-the-stretch to deliver a Clemson football victory, but there’s also a special kind of memory for Tiger fans that don’t have to do with ‘classics.’
They’re known as blowouts.
Just as sweet as it is to remember Rod Gardner’s catch, it is also sweet to reminisce about the games where the Tigers absolutely mopped the floor with the Gamecocks. There’s certainly no love lost between the Clemson and South Carolina fanbases and, as a result, blowouts may be remembered fonder than the heroics found in some of the close games.
Today, let’s take a look at the five largest [in terms of points] victories in Clemson football history vs. South Carolina.
