Clemson Football: Blowing out opponents becoming a trend for Tigers
The Clemson football program has become a factory for blowing out opponents, especially in conference play over the past few years.
The Clemson football program just hasn’t played all that many close games.
The Tigers have blown out teams over the past few years and this season is no exception. Except for a 21-20 victory over UNC, Clemson football has been absolutely dominant all season.
Here’s a look at a few interesting stats in terms of how much Clemson football is dominating its opponents, beginning with a comparison of winning margin.
Winning Margin (Through 10 games):
- 2016: 20.5
- 2017: 17.7
- 2018: 31.0
- 2019: 33.8
That’s right, Tiger fans. The 2019 Clemson football team is beating opponents by nearly 14 more points per game than what the 2016 team (that won the National Championship) did. The 2019 team is also beating opponents by more at this point in the season than last year’s National Championship team.
Despite the narrative that Clemson football has somehow been less than dominant, the truth is that the Tigers have been more dominant than they have been in each of the last few seasons in which they made the CFB Playoff and won two of the last three National Titles.
Conference Games within 10 points (since 2016):
- 2016: Louisville (42-36)
- 2016: NC State (24-17)
- 2016: Pittsburgh (43-42 L)
- 2016: Virginia Tech (42-35) *ACC Championship*
- 2017: Syracuse (27-24 L)
- 2017: NC State (38-31)
- 2018: Syracuse (27-23)
- 2019: North Carolina (21-20)
Over the course of the last four seasons, Clemson football has played a grand total of eight games in conference in which the outcome was decided by single digits. Four of those eight came in the 2016 season.
Of the eight, Clemson has won six of them and lost two (Pitt in 2016, Syracuse in 2017) and the Tigers have absolutely dominated their competition.
Domination is becoming a trending for the Clemson football program. The Tigers continue to find new ways to up their winning margin and it’s become absolutely crazy to see just how far ahead Clemson is compared not just to the rest of the ACC, but the majority of the country.
