The Clemson football team blasted the NC State Wolfpack Saturday night. What will it mean in terms of the CFB Playoff following Week 11?
The Clemson football team blasted the NC State Wolfpack in Carter-Finley Stadium to win the Textile Bowl Trophy and clinch the ACC Atlantic Division.
While the Tigers guaranteed their spot in the conference championship in Charlotte, there are even bigger stakes for the remainder of this season.
Clemson football came into Week 11 ranked No. 5 in the nation, but the Tigers had two teams- Penn State (No. 4) and Alabama (No. 3)- drop games this weekend. What will it mean in terms of the new rankings?
Here’s a look at the CFB Playoff implications following a crazy weekend of College Football.
CFB Playoff Implications:
As far as the top-two spots are concerned, it should likely be expected that the two teams will switch. Ohio State will drop to No. 2 (despite a 73-14 win over Maryland), and LSU will move to No. 1 with the win over Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
By most accounts, Clemson (10-0) will move to No. 3 and the No. 4 spot will be left up to the discretion of the CFB Playoff committee.
Who could it be? Well, Alabama (one-loss), Minnesota (undefeated), Georgia (one-loss), Oklahoma (one-loss), Oregon (one-loss) and Utah (one-loss) could all have a say there.
Minnesota defeated Penn State this weekend, but the Golden Gophers struggled mightily against some inferior opponents earlier in the season.
The committee has already been known to have a terrible analysis on the ‘eye-test.’ This is the same group that told us that Penn State should be ahead of Clemson and that Alabama deserved to be No. 3 despite not playing anybody.
If I were guessing what the top-10 will look like according to the committee, here’s my best guess. (Keep in mind this is a prediction, not what I think should happen.
- LSU
- Ohio State
- Clemson
- Georgia
- Alabama
- Oregon
- Utah
- Oklahoma
- Minnesota
- Florida
This is what the committee will likely do, but I don’t agree. Georgia is way too high and I don’t believe Alabama should be at No. 5 either. Oregon and Utah, as well as Minnesota, should get their shot near the top of the rankings, but the committee likely won’t look at it that way.
More importantly than anything else, Clemson football needs to just keep winning. The Tigers have regular season games remaining against Wake Forest and South Carolina before playing in the ACC Championship the first Saturday in December.
