There have been only a couple of times in the recent history of the Clemson football program where fans legitimately left the game early or cut the television off because they just knew there was no hope.

The 2012 Orange Bowl against West Virginia was one of those times.

After losing to South Carolina- the Tigers’ third loss in the last four games of the season- Clemson took some of the disappointment away by upsetting the No. 5-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies to win the ACC Championship.

Unfortunately, Clemson was absolutely waxed by the West Virginia Mountaineers in the Orange Bowl, a final score of 70-33. The Tigers’ first-ever BCS bowl experience was more than disappointing, it was embarrassing.

Like the previous game, though, something astounding came out of this loss. Dabo Swinney hired Brent Venables as the new Defensive Coordinator and we can all see now how great of a hire that truly was.
