Clemson Football: Why Trevor Lawrence is still a Heisman candidate
Despite many analysts already pushing tired narratives, Clemson football QB Trevor Lawrence is still a Heisman candidate for the 2019 season.
Fox Sport’s Skip Bayless had a rather reactionary show Friday afternoon where he questioned if Clemson football QB Trevor Lawrence was still in the Heisman running.
Lawrence, a sophomore quarterback, didn’t have a great showing in the season-opener against Georgia Tech. He completed just 13-of-23 passes for 168 yards and a touchdown, while also throwing two interceptions. Lawrence also had three rushing attempts for 24 yards and a touchdown.
The stats were less than stellar and that led to ‘talking heads’ like Skip Bayless jumping on content and pushing narratives that just don’t exist.
Despite what you may be thinking or what analysts may tell you following Trevor Lawrence’s performance Thursday, he is still squarely in the Heisman race.
Still a Heisman Candidate…
Trevor Lawrence is still a Heisman candidate because he’s the best quarterback in College Football. Just because he had a subpar game and looked human doesn’t mean that he’s finished for the rest of the season.
Lawrence has responded to adversity well during the early part of his career and there’s no reason to believe that he won’t come out and have a great performance next Saturday when the Tigers take on Texas A&M.
The one thing that may hurt Lawrence’s Heisman chances is the fact that he isn’t going to play full games due to blowouts that are going to happen over the course of the 2019 Clemson football season.
There are plenty of yards to go around between him and Travis Etienne and we’re going to see a much-improved Trevor Lawrence from Week 1 to Week 2. The sophomore is still the best quarterback in the nation and he has all the skills to turn things around.
The key for Lawrence will be taking the pressure off of himself and instead focusing on getting wins. When he does that, the stats and accolades will come along with it.
