Trevor Lawrence knows he’ll be relied upon to lead the Clemson football offense in 2019. He’s building chemistry will all of his wide receivers.
There was a different vibe coming from Clemson football’s QB room this time last year.
The Tigers didn’t have a full-time starter and the coaches knew it. There was a major battle looming that most knew would continue through the season and, in fact, it did.
Wide receivers were forced to get comfortable with two quarterbacks- Kelly Bryant (the incumbent starter) and Trevor Lawrence (the star-studded true-freshman). Though the wide-outs said they didn’t care who was throwing the passes, it was clear that there was a difference between the success rate of when Bryant was in the game compared to when Lawrence took over as the quarterback.
Lawrence eventually won the starting job, but that was four games into the season.
Coming into this year, there is no controversy.
Wide receivers know they’re going to be catching passes from Lawrence and because of that, it seems the Clemson football QB has spent time this offseason developing chemistry with his wide receiver group.
Lawrence has had a full offseason- for the first time in his career- to develop chemistry with guys like Tee Higgins, Justyn Ross, Diondre Overton and others. He’s been able to work on that deep ball, those sideline outs and much more.
Even something as simple as having a handshake with every single wide receiver. That may not seem like a big deal, but it shows that he is communicating with the group and they are taking the next step to get better and become the best that they can possibly be.
Lawrence and this group of wide receivers are both going to be much more confident heading into this season. There’s going to be a comfort level that wasn’t necessarily there last season.
We’re going to see them build off of the CFB Playoff performance and, because of that, the offense is going to run on a much smoother level in 2019.
