The 2019 Clemson football season is less than a month away from kickoff. Here’s our preview on the running back group heading into the year.

The 2019 Clemson football season is almost upon us.

The Tigers are officially beginning fall camp and are preparing for what promises to be another successful year under Dabo Swinney.

Clemson will be looking to defend its National Championship and is certainly in position to get back to the CFB Playoff.

Over the course of the next few weeks, we will give a preview by position for the 2019 Clemson football team that will include a projected depth chart and breakdown. Here’s our preview of the running back group.

Projected Depth Chart:

Starter: Travis Etienne

  • Lyn-J Dixon
  • Darien Rencher or Chez Mellusi or Michel Dukes

Running Backs Preview:

The Clemson football running back group took a bit of an unexpected hit when veteran Tavien Feaster entered the NCAA Transfer Portal and ended up at in-state rival South Carolina.

Feaster was likely to be a co-backup with Dixon, or even potentially third on the depth chart, but now the Tigers will rely on some of the younger options to get the job done in providing depth.

Travis Etienne is the incumbent starter and defending ACC Player of the Year. Etienne will split time with Lyn-J Dixon as the two burden the majority of the carries. Following those two, the Tigers are going to have a three-way battle for third-string.

Veteran Darien Rencher will get the first shot at being the third guy on the depth chart, but he’ll be challenged by two talented true-freshmen in Chez Mellusi and Michel Dukes. Both freshmen are explosive runners and at least one will avoid a redshirt and play solid snaps this season.

Overall, this group is in good position heading into fall camp. Etienne-Dixon may be the best running back duo in the nation and there is certainly promise behind them to provide depth in the running back room.
