ESPN released its latest positional rankings at wide receiver pertaining to collegiate programs and Clemson football wasn’t listed in the top-10.

Over the past several years, the Clemson football program has come to be known as ‘WRU’ by many.

Though Tiger fans, recruits and the NFL would likely agree, ESPN seems to differ. The organization released its positional rankings at every position pertaining to the amount of talent that a collegiate program produces.

The rankings take into account All-Americans, NFL Draft picks, as well as stars at both the collegiate and pro levels to come up with a formula for determining how teams fare. Here’s a look at the top-10 at wide receiver, according to ESPN.

  1. USC
  2. Ohio State
  3. Florida State
  4. Oklahoma State
  5. LSU
  6. Oklahoma
  7. Florida
  8. Michigan
  9. Alabama
  10. Notre Dame

Thoughts:

Yes, we all know in the history of College Football that Clemson hasn’t quite produced the same amount of wide receiver talent as a Southern Cal or Michigan, for example.

But, ESPN is leaving out the fact that the Tigers have produced more viable wide receivers in the past half-decade than any other program in the nation. Clemson football is recruiting better than anyone else at the wide receiver position and Tiger Town has become a destination for wide receivers.

You can take any formula you want to prove a point, but there’s a reason that Clemson is referred to as ‘WRU.’ It’s because of the fact that the Tigers have had guys like DeAndre ‘Nuk’ Hopkins, Sammy Watkins, Mike Williams, Jaron Brown, Adam Humphries, Hunter Renfrow, Deon Cain and Ray Ray McCloud, who all played within a few years of one another but have all made it to the professional level.

There’s a popular picture from the 2011 Clemson football team that had every scholarship wide receiver sitting on the bench together with an NFL team’s logo above their head. That’s the kind of success the Tigers have had producing talent at the position.

If that wasn’t enough, Clemson also has guys like Justyn Ross and Tee Higgins- both future first-rounders- on its current roster and the Tigers don’t seem to be slowing down any time soon.

If it makes programs like Southern Cal, Florida and Florida State feel good to live in the past about the talent that they once produced, that’s fine.

But, we all know where the real Wide Receiver U is located.
