Several quarterbacks were named to the watch list for the 2019 Davey O’Brien Award. Clemson football QB Trevor Lawrence should be favored.

As we head into the start of the 2019 Clemson football season, we’re going to see several Tigers nominated for preseason watch lists pertaining to individual awards.

Trevor Lawrence was one of 30 quarterbacks named to the 2019 Davey O’Brien Award preseason watch list. The award recognizes the nation’s best quarterback and, for the last 13 years, fans have been able to take part in the voting process.

Sixteen semifinalists will be selected for the award in November and then three finalists will be selected at the end of the same month. The award winner will be unveiled in December on ESPN during The Home Depot College Football Awards show.

As of right now, there are several quarterbacks to watch throughout the season.

Some notable names the foundation has included in addition to Trevor Lawrence: Tua Tagovailoa (Alabama), Jake Bentley (South Carolina), Ian Book (Notre Dame), Joe Burrow (LSU), Sam Ehlinger (Texas), JT Daniels (USC), Feleipe Franks (Florida), Jake Fromm (Georgia), Justin Herbert (Oregon), Shea Patterson (Michigan), Bryce Perkins (Virginia), Khalil Tate (Arizona) and Zac Thomas (Appalachian State) as quarterbacks listed.

When looking at this list of quarterbacks, it’s clear that there’s certainly a lot of talent around the nation, but nothing that compares to Trevor Lawrence. Tua Tagovailoa won the award last season, but there’s certainly an argument to be made that Lawrence was playing better at the end of the season.

Unfortunately, this award doesn’t wait for the postseason. So, if Lawrence wants to come away with the accolade, he’ll have to do it with impressive statistics in the regular season and helping Clemson football dominate its schedule.

After watching what unfolded at the end of last year, though, there’s no reason to think that anyone other than Trevor Lawrence should be the favorite for the prestigious award here in the preseason.
