Nick Saban didn’t exactly come out and give much respect to Clemson football in his latest interview. Instead, it seems even he is making excuses.

It’s expected that the SEC media talking heads would make excuses for why Alabama lost to Clemson football.

After all, it’s not called ‘talking season’ for just any reason. Everyone needs a hot take or something to hold on to during the spring and summer months when there’s no football happening on the field.

However, it’s a different thing when Nick Saban comes out with excuses.

Saban, who led Alabama to a 44-16 loss to Clemson in the National Championship game, told media members at SEC Media Days that the Crimson Tide had too many individuals focused on their personal goals rather than the team goals. This, in turn, led to a distracted team when the time came to take on the laser-focused Clemson football program.

Saban iterated that several players may have had their eyes on the NFL and that a couple of coaches were more focused on their next job rather than helping to continue to build the program. With the coaches distracted, the staff wasn’t able to properly prepare the team.

Thoughts:

Personally, I expected the Paul Finebaums of the world to come out and come up with excuses for why Alabama lost. However, I did not expect Nick Saban to come out and do the same.

Even he must’ve been listening to the SEC Network this entire summer. Instead of just owning up and saying that the Crimson Tide were beaten by a better team, he blames it on ‘distractions.’

The truth is this: If there were distractions, it’s Nick Saban’s fault. If you don’t want coaches to have their eyes on the next coaching job, then how about don’t work them to death and create an atmosphere where they want to leave year-in and year-out?

In my opinion, Saban realizes that the tides are changing and he doesn’t like it. He’s trying to get that Alabama factor back and pretend as if there isn’t a program ahead of the Crimson Tide right now led by Dabo Swinney. If he can point to excuses to dismiss the loss, it doesn’t seem as if things are as bad.
