One of Clemson football’s major rivals in the late 20th century was the Georgia Bulldogs. The two programs could renew their rivalry in the CFB Playoff.

It’s been several years since Clemson football played Georgia.

As a matter of fact, the last time the two programs matched up on a football field was back in 2014 when Deshaun Watson was just a freshman and hadn’t even become the full-time starter. Over the past four years, both the Tigers and the Bulldogs have seen steady improvement.

Georgia got rid of its old head coach in Mark Richt and turned to a newly-energized Kirby Smart, who has since recruited at a high level and has won a lot of games with the Bulldogs.

The Tigers have been on a steady climb since that season, as well, going on to have greater success by making four CFB Playoff appearances, winning four ACC Championships and coming away with two National Titles.

As we head into 2019, there’s a good chance that we could see the Clemson-Georgia rivalry renewed, but it won’t happen in the regular season. Could Clemson football take on Georgia in the CFB Playoff?

A Dream Matchup…

The history and geography of this matchup would make it a fun and refreshing one for College Football fans across the country, but especially fans of the two programs.

Imagine this scenario: Clemson goes undefeated with a 13-0 record. Both Georgia and Alabama go 12-0 in the regular season, but the Bulldogs lose to the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game. There’s a good chance that the CFB Playoff committee would put Georgia as the No. 3 seed with just one loss to Alabama over another one-loss conference champion- like Oklahoma or Ohio State.

In that scenario, we could see the Tigers and Bulldogs play each other in the CFB Playoff semifinals and it could potentially happen in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta. Most likely, you’d have to see one of them possess the No. 1 seed, though, since it would be expected that Alabama would choose the Peach Bowl if they were the No. 1 seed.

But, that would be absolutely insane. A Clemson-UGA playoff ticket in Mercedes-Benz Stadium would go for thousands of dollars. The entire town of Atlanta would be packed to the brim unlike anything we’ve ever seen before.

It’s not exactly the most likely thing to happen, but it certainly would make for fun television and even greater atmosphere for a CFB Playoff game.
