Clemson football freshman quarterback Taisun Phommachanh is much more seasoned than most originally could imagine after watching film.

Over the course of the next couple of months, Rubbing the Rock will be giving you a breakdown of each 2019 Clemson football freshman.

Today, we continue the series with a look at quarterback Taisun Phommachanh.

Phommachanh, a 6-foot-3, 194 pound QB from Bridgeport, Connecticut, was rated as a 4-star prospect coming out of high school. He was the nation’s No. 4 dual-threat quarterback and the No. 2 rated prospect out of the state of Connecticut.

Analysis:

One of the main concerns for Phommachanh coming out of high school was his lack of competition. He was able to fill up the stat sheet pretty easily, and that was due partly to not much talent in the state.

Though Phommachanh is a dual-threat QB, he is certainly no slouch in the passing game.

One of the things I really like about him is his quick release. As a matter of fact, his release may be better than any QB not named Trevor Lawrence on the roster.

Phommachanh doesn’t have the strongest arm in the world, but he’s certainly capable of accurately throwing deep passes and has the ability to put good touch on the ball. Though we compared him to Kelly Bryant, I actually believe Phommachanh is a much better passer of the football than Bryant.

Phommachanh is extremely athletic and could potentially change positions and be effective as a wide receiver or defensive back if he so chose to go down that path.

Immediate Impact?

I expect Phommachanh to redshirt this season when it’s all said and done. I do believe that he’ll see playing time in up to four games, which is allowed as part of the new redshirt rule.

But, the Tigers have their starter at QB in Trevor Lawrence and their second-string in Chase Brice. Phommachanh will have to be patient if he wants a shot at that starting position, and he’ll have plenty of competition with 5-star QB DJ Uiagalelei joining the Clemson football program next January.
