5-star Clemson football commit DJ Uiagalelei is primed to be an elite quarterback at the collegiate level, but he can also throw a 95 mph fastball.
There are very few athletes that can legitimately play two sports at the Division 1 collegiate level. That number is even lower for athletes who could play two sports at the professional level.
5-star Clemson football QB commit DJ Uiagalelei is one of those guys.
Uiagalelei, who announced his commitment to Clemson this past weekend, chose the Tigers over Oregon and is now primed to be the next elite quarterback to lead the Clemson football program after Trevor Lawrence.
Though Uiagalelei is a skilled quarterback, his arm talent transcends football. He is an elite baseball player, as well.
Just so you have an idea of what I’m talking about: Uiagalelei can throw a football 80-plus yards legitimately. He also can throw a fastball at speeds over 95 mph. That’s absolutely stunning.
So, will Uiagalelei play baseball at Clemson?
The short answer to that is ‘yes.’
The plan, as it stands currently, is for DJ to enroll early in January, according to Tigernet’s Nikki Hood. He will then be able to try out for the baseball team and potentially play baseball his freshman season in a quick turnaround. Uiagalelei would still participate in spring practices as a mid-year enrollee and then would work full-time on his football skills in the summer and fall.
Uiagalelei could be drafted in the MLB Draft, which could play a factor in his decision down the road, but it seems that he is content with coming to school and playing both football and baseball at this point.
As a freshman, Uiagalelei would be able to learn under a junior Trevor Lawrence and get his feet wet before potentially taking over as the starter his sophomore season.
It would certainly be crazy, but Clemson University could potentially have a man named DJ Uiagalelei as its starting quarterback on the football team and one of its starting pitchers on the baseball team. The sky is the limit for Uiagalelei and many of the plans haven’t yet been worked out, but he certainly has the talent and ability to do whatever he puts his mind to.
Clemson ended up with a special talent and it will be interesting to see how his athletic career progresses over the next few years.
