Clemson Football: 4-star DB RJ Mickens commits to Tigers
4-star DB RJ Mickens announced Saturday afternoon that he had committed to the Clemson football program, becoming the 10th commitment in 2020 class.
The 2020 Clemson football recruiting class has the opportunity to be one of the best in school history.
Before the announcement from Mickens, the Tigers had gained verbal commitments from nine 4-stars.
Mickens, the 4-star defensive back out of Southlake, Texas, announced his commitment to Clemson football officially Saturday morning before the Spring Game, becoming the 10th 4-star commitment in the class.
With his commitment, the Tigers have moved up to the No. 2 overall class in the 247 Sports’ Composite Rankings.
Analysis:
Mickens is the 247 Sports’ Composite No. 1 safety in the nation, for good reason.
He’s extremely athletic and physical. One position that the Tigers haven’t gotten a bunch of elite players at in past years was at safety. There’s been a few elite prospects commit like Isaiah Simmons, Jayron Kearse and- last year- Joseph Charleston.
But, overall, there haven’t been a bunch of big names.
I really am excited for the prospect of seeing a safety group that includes Charleston and Mickens. That could be an elite group of safeties here in a couple of years when the two players have developed.
Mickens is a very versatile player with great ability to both cover in man situations and play effective coverage in zone. He also is able to read the offense and finish off runners with his physicality.
This was his fifth visit to Clemson.
