The Clemson football team will not open up the 2020 season in Mercedes-Benz Stadium as recent reports suggest. The Tigers will play in the stadium in 2020.

Clemson football will open up the 2022 season with a conference game against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The recent reports from Brett McMurphy, which were later picked up by basically every single Clemson media organization out there, were not accurate. The reports said that the Tigers would open up the 2020 season in Mercedes-Benz Stadium against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets as part of a deal where Georgia Tech would be playing several home games at the new stadium in downtown Atlanta.

Unfortunately, that won’t be happening next season.

Georgia Tech will be playing Notre Dame (Nov. 14) in 2020 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and then an opponent TBA in 2021.

The Yellow Jackets will, in fact, take on Clemson in Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sept. 5, 2020 for a Labor Day Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.

Clemson will return to Mercedes-Benz Stadium in 2024, when the Tigers take on the Georgia Bulldogs in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.

Thoughts:

It’s a little disappointing because everyone was getting their hopes up that we were going to see the Tigers in the huge stadium two years from now. That 2020 season would be Trevor Lawrence and Justyn Ross’s junior seasons, so it certainly would’ve been a fun environment.

Despite that, it will be interesting to play that game on Labor Day in 2022.

It should be fun and, though it will be a neutral-site game, I expect the Tiger faithful to dominate the stands for that one despite the fact that Georgia Tech’s campus is just a few miles away.

Overall, I’d expect this one to be close to a sellout, but Clemson football fans will have to wait a few more years to see it happen.
