Clemson Football: Who redshirted during the 2018 season?
Which Clemson football players redshirted during the 2018 season? Here’s a look at the beginning of our series on the redshirt report.
The 2018 Clemson football season was one of the best in school history.
The Tigers finished with a perfect 15-0 record and a National Championship, which was their second in the past three years.
It was certainly a year to remember.
Now, Clemson will be looking to defend its National Title this coming year. Some of the major contributors in the 2019 season will be players that redshirted in 2018.
The new redshirt rule has also helped the Tigers with allowing guys to get valuable playing experience in four games and still not lose a year of eligibility. It strategically allows coaches to find out what they have in specific players and use their strengths during certain points of a season without turning around and wasting the whole year.
So, here’s a look at the Tigers that redshirted in 2018.
Player Name, Position (2019 classification):
- KJ Henry, DE (redshirt freshman)
- Ben Batson, QB (redshirt freshman)
- Mike Jones Jr., LB (redshirt freshman)
- Darnell Jefferies, DT (redshirt freshman)
- Jamie Skalski, LB (redshirt junior)
- Jake Venables, LB (redshirt freshman)
- Jordan McFadden, OL (redshirt freshman)
- Justin Mascoll, DE (redshirt freshman)
- Cornell Powell, WR (redshirt junior)
Early Thoughts:
Starting next week, we’ll be giving you a redshirt report breaking down each of these guys and what their role could look like with Clemson football next year.
Mot of these guys are redshirt freshmen, but I am also interested in the two guys- Skalski and Powell- that chose to redshirt their junior seasons. Skalski is now lined up to be a starter in that linebacking corp this coming year and the year after that.
Cornell Powell could potentially move over to defensive back, but if not, he’s in much better position to play a lot of snaps at wide receiver with two more years of eligibility.
It was rumored that he could be considering transferring after deciding to redshirt, but it looks as if Powell has really worked hard and is excited about playing two more years with Clemson football.
