Clemson football quarterback Trevor Lawrence will be attempting to make history when the Tigers begin their CFB Playoff run in just a little over a week.
Before last season, there had only been one quarterback in the history of College Football to lead his team to a National Championship as a freshman.
Who was that quarterback? It’s Oklahoma’s Jamelle Holieway, who replaced an injured Troy Aikman in the 1985-86 season, according to the LA Times.
Tua Tagovailoa technically did it as he took over for Jalen Hurts in the second half of last year’s National Championship game to defeat Georgia.
In the same game, Georgia’s Jake Fromm had the chance to do it, but couldn’t get over the hump.
Now, Trevor Lawrence has the chance to join the list and put his name in the history books. Interestingly enough, Holieway took over as the starter in the fourth game of the season, just like Lawrence.
If the Tigers could win the title, Lawrence would be the first freshman quarterback in College Football history to lead his team to a National Championship in the playoff era after starting the majority of the regular season games.
Making history…
Trevor Lawrence certainly has the talent and ability to get the job done. The playoff run for Clemson football starts with Notre Dame, though.
It will be interesting to see how Lawrence responds and what he’s able to do early in the game against the Fighting Irish as nerves settle in. Lawrence has, in my opinion, the strongest arm in the nation and is only getting better.
Notre Dame will attempt to pressure the young freshman and get him out of rhythm. If Lawrence can keep his cool, I think he’s got a great opportunity to have a solid game and lead the Tigers to the National Title game.
If Clemson gets there, all bets are off.
Lawrence has a chance to be special and join a list of just two names all-time to lead their teams to a National Championship as freshmen. It’s certainly a high goal, but it’s one that he is more than capable of accomplishing.
