Clemson Football: 4-star Phommachanh has a Deshaun Watson element
Clemson football quarterback signee Taisun Phommachanh has been overlooked a bit by the Tiger faithful, but he certainly has some raw athletic talent.
Clemson football quarterback signee Taisun Phommachanh isn’t just coming into the program to be a place-holder.
While most Tiger fans have already taken the step of looking forward to 5-star QB DJ Uiagalelei’s decision, Phommachanh is coming into the program with something to prove.
He wasn’t given much love or coverage from recruiting sites during his senior year despite his talent and ability.
While he’s not Deshaun Watson, Phommachanh does have a bit of a Watson-type element in his game.
Analysis:
He doesn’t have the arm of Trevor Lawrence and will probably need to correct a few mechanics when he steps on campus.
Even with that being said, Phommachanh is just a great raw athlete.
He is able to make all the throws needed at the next level and his best trait is his legs. This kid has a better arm than a Kelly Bryant, but is still the same kind of athlete.
Because of that, he reminds me just a bit of Deshaun Watson when you watch the film between the two.
Watson was a guy that could make all the throws and make plays with his legs. This is the same type of player that Phommachanh is.
He’ll most likely redshirt as a freshman and take the 2019 season to improve. After that, he’ll be one of those primed to compete for the starting spot when Trevor Lawrence leaves most likely after his junior season.
It will be interesting to see Phommachanh’s role in this quarterback room and how he is able to compete for Clemson football. He certainly has the talent to be a starting quarterback for the Tigers one day, but we all know that the quarterback room is always the most crowded.
