3. 1977: Jerry Butler, “The Catch Part I”

Now that we introduced you to “The Catch Part II,” we should probably bring up the original catch. Also known as “The Catch Part I.”

Clemson jumped out to a 17-0 lead at halftime over South Carolina (5-5).

Unfortunately for the Tigers, the Gamecocks came roaring back in the second half. South Carolina rallied from the 17-point deficit and took a 27-24 lead with just 1:48 left to play.

Clemson had previously celebrated victories that season with cigars. After scoring the touchdown, Gamecock wide receiver Phil Logan was seen lifting his jersey up with a shirt that said “No Cigars Today.”

His celebration, though, was a bit premature.

The Tigers marched down the field and Steve Fuller found Jerry Butler for the touchdown.

The leaping grab is simply known as “The Catch.”
