Could Clemson football freshman Trevor Lawrence take his spot at the top of the list of ACC quarterbacks Saturday when he matches up with Ryan Finley?
Trevor Lawrence has played pretty well for Clemson football through the first six games of the season.
Lawrence, the true-freshman out of Cartersville, GA, took over as the starter four games into the season and has continued to progress as a passer, leader and a quarterback for the Tigers.
Through the midseason- even with having to share time with Kelly Bryant in the first half of the season- Lawrence leads the ACC in QB Rating and in yards per attempt.
Who is his biggest competition for the spot of top quarterbacks in the league? It has to be veteran Ryan Finley from NC State.
This Saturday, we will see the two quarterbacks face off. The veteran Finley and the freshman Lawrence.
While they won’t be competing directly against one another, it still will be a fun talking point to mention.
Lawrence vs. Finley…
Here’s a current breakdown of statistics between Trevor Lawrence and Ryan Finley.
Passing Yards: Trevor Lawrence 868; Ryan Finley 1,621.
Passing Touchdowns to Interceptions: Trevor Lawrence 11 TD, 2 INT; Ryan Finley 10 TD, 3 INT.
Completion Percentage: Trevor Lawrence 69 percent; Ryan Finley 69.5.
Yards Per Attempt: Trevor Lawrence 8.68; Ryan Finley 8.67.
QB Rating: Trevor Lawrence 174.2; Ryan Finley 156.8.
It’s pretty impressive, in my opinion, that Lawrence leads Finley in three of the five major categories through the first part of the season despite having to split reps.
Lawrence has more touchdown passes, a better QB rating and better yards per attempt. Now, that could all change one way or another if Lawrence had played full-time like Finley had through the first four games.
It’s still interesting, though. This match up between these two quarterbacks should be a lot of fun. In my opinion, this game could be a great breakout game for the young freshman. It will be a chance for him to go ahead and take over what will most likely be his spot for the next three years as far as the conference is concerned.
