Clemson Football: Jeff Scott fires back at Desmond Howard
Clemson football co-offensive coordinator Jeff Scott did not take too kindly to the words of ESPN College GameDay host Desmond Howard.
The Clemson football team absolutely blanked the Wake Forest Demon Deacons Saturday afternoon, posting a score of 66-3.
The Tigers were dominant on both sides of the ball and it was something that the Tigers needed heading into a bye week.
While we’ve all been a little frustrated with the close games and lack of ability to put teams away early, ESPN College GameDay Host Desmond Howard took it to another level on the popular television show Saturday morning.
In addition to those comments, Howard also said that Clemson’s decision to name Trevor Lawrence the starting quarterback over Kelly Bryant will “blow up in their face.”
"“I don’t see them being a physical outfit offensively,” Howard said on ESPN College GameDay. “They are more of a finesse group; they are not gonna be a smash mouth group. You can’t change who you are in the middle of the season. You are who you are. You are what you are.”"
His analysis seemed pretty silly after looking back on things Saturday evening.
Clemson co-offensive coordinator Jeff Scott fired back at the commentator’s words following the Tigers’ victory yesterday.
"“Somebody needs to send that to Desmond Howard so he can get his facts straight,” he said. “It’s hard to be a finesse group when you are rushing for 300 yards a game. You would agree with that, wouldn’t you?”"
Analysis:
To call Clemson a finesse group tells me that Howard has absolutely no idea what he is talking about. I mean, has he seen any Clemson football this season?
The answer to that is a resounding “no” if you think this team is all finesse and no power ability. The Tigers rushed for more than 400 yards on the ground Saturday against Wake Forest and I think they took some of his words to heart.
Of course, I don’t think anybody should put much merit in what Howard says.
He is the same analyst that picked Michigan to win the National Championship and for South Carolina to win the SEC East. The truth is, he just has to try to entertain and come up with takes that cause controversy.
If you don’t do that, you won’t have ratings.
It still is surprising though to see the vendetta that it seems the ESPN analyst has put forth against Clemson. It will be interesting to see how long he can keep this up.
