Clemson Football: Can Trevor Lawrence win the National Championship?
Can Trevor Lawrence lead Clemson football to a National Championship as a freshman? That’s the question everyone is asking.
Clemson football senior quarterback Kelly Bryant announced that he would be transferring out of the program Wednesday morning after he was beaten out for the starting position by freshman Trevor Lawrence.
With the transfer of Bryant, the Clemson quarterback room- which once was full- is now down to just three players- Lawrence, Chase Brice and Ben Batson. Hunter Renfrow is actually fourth on the depth chart at quarterback.
So, it’s clear that for Clemson football to win a National Championship, it’s going to have to be by the leadership of Trevor Lawrence.
I’m not saying that he’ll have to do it on his own. He’s got a very talented and capable defense and plenty of play makers on offense to make his job easier, but he will have to be the glue that keeps the team together and intact going forward.
That’s a lot to place on a young freshman, I don’t care who they are.
It’s a completely different mindset that you have to have and it’s one of those deals where you’ve got to refocus and get ready.
With that in mind, here’s the big question: Can Trevor Lawrence lead Clemson to a National Championship?
The short answer is “yes.”
Clemson does have the benefit of playing a favorable schedule. There is no game in the regular season that the Tigers won’t be more talented than the opponent that they are facing.
That means that Lawrence will have some room to make some mistakes and still win a ton of games. Right now, I don’t care who is at quarterback, no one is beating Alabama. But, by the end of the year a ton of things could change.
Giving Trevor Lawrence a chance to lead this entire season will put him in position to play his best game when the Tigers do play in the ACC Championship Game and in the College Football Playoff.
The good thing for Lawrence, like I said earlier, is that he’s got plenty of talent around him. Travis Etienne, Tee Higgins, Justyn Ross, Amari Rodgers, Hunter Renfrow and Tavien Feaster. He’s got plenty of options.
All Lawrence needs to do is stay calm, learn as the season progresses and most importantly stay healthy. If he can do those things, he’ll have the Tigers in position to play in the College Football Playoff, where anything can happen.
